Amazon Flex algorithm forces delivery drivers to take unsafe routes

Amazon routing algorithms are forcing delivery drivers to take dangerous routes and run across four-lane highways at night with multiple packages and boxes, raising concerns about their safety. Designed to optimise delivery efficiency, Amazon Flex routing algorithms often group deliveries on both sides of a street into a single stop, compelling drivers to cross dangerous roads, including multi-lane highways, sometimes at night while carrying multiple packages. The move has persuaded some drivers to bring another person with them to park and look after their vehicles while they make deliveries. The situation highlights the conflict between algorithmic efficiency and human safety in the gig economy. The pressure to meet delivery quotas, combined with an algorithm that doesn't adequately account for road safety, puts drivers in potentially life-threatening situations.
