A class action filed on June 9, 2026 in New York state court by the Policing Project, the Knight First Amendment Institute, the NYCLU and Freshfields on behalf of drivers alleges that the Westchester County Police Department's network of nearly 600 automated license plate readers is a warrantless surveillance system that violates the New York constitution. The suit alleges the county has built a database of 1.6 billion plate scans and shared it with more than 50 outside agencies, including ICE. The county says the suit contains legal and factual errors; the claims have not been decided.
