Batam Residents Suffer Amid Data Center Project: ‘The Water Isn’t Flowing’

Hundreds of residents in Bakau Serip protested outside the Nongsa Special Economic Zone after water to their homes had been cut off for about three months. They called for service to be restored and rejected tanker-delivered water, which they said was dirty, cloudy, and smelly. Trend Asia says 18 areas in Batam were classified as water-stressed as of September 2026, and data center growth could put further pressure on the island’s water resources.
