In February 2024, U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez saw a deepfake image of herself being forced into a sexual act while scrolling through X. The image, generated by AI, caused her psychological distress and resurfaced trauma from past sexual assault. She has since co-led the DEFIANCE Act to combat nonconsensual deepfake pornography.
