Publisher Kōbunsha said it would withdraw and recall a book published in September after finding that it included false information generated through the use of AI. The author, Ryukyu University professor Jun Shimabukuro, cited three supposed international court rulings concerning the killing of residents suspected of spying during the Battle of Okinawa; none existed, and he had used AI search results without verifying them. The publisher apologized and said buyers would receive a full refund.
