Oxford study finds ChatGPT reproduces global inequalities
A study by the Oxford Internet Institute and the University of Kentucky found that ChatGPT systematically attributes positive characteristics to wealthier countries in the Global North and negative stereotypes to lower-income regions, particularly African countries. The research analysed 20.3 million queries and identified five types of bias, concluding that bias is a structural feature of generative AI. The study was published in the journal Platforms and Society on 20th January 2026.
