Confidential data from São Paulo’s Smart Sampa surveillance system was exposed online for about 11 months, allowing anyone to access footage from more than 58,000 cameras across the city, including cameras at schools, day care centers and hospitals. The city confirmed the leak but denied that the system had a security flaw, blaming an authorized staff member who was suspended and is under investigation. The city says the exposed data repository has been taken offline and that security measures have been upgraded.
