TikTok fined £12.7m for failing to protect children's data privacy
The UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) fined TikTok £12.7m for allowing up to 1.4 million children under 13 to use the platform between May 2018 and July 2020 without parental consent. The ICO found that TikTok collected and used children's data for profiling and targeting advertising, potentially exposing them to harmful content. TikTok has disputed the decision and is considering an appeal, and the fine was reduced from an initial proposed £27m.
