Twitter's image-cropping algorithm was found to favor younger, thinner, and female faces over others, as well as white faces and Western text. The bias was discovered through a contest at the Defcon security conference where researchers analyzed the algorithm's code. Twitter acknowledged the bias and stopped using the algorithm in May 2021. The findings highlight the need for external scrutiny of AI systems to detect harmful biases.
