Five Detroit residents and the James and Grace Lee Boggs Center sued the city, the mayor and the police department in late 2022. They allege the City Council lacked authority to approve a $7 million expansion of ShotSpotter gunshot detection and a $1.5 million contract extension. They also allege the approval violated Detroit's Community Input over Government Surveillance Ordinance.
