Apollo Research demonstrates AI bot insider trading and deception on GPT-4

Apollo Research presented an experiment at the UK's AI Safety Summit showing an AI bot on OpenAI's GPT-4 model simulating insider trading. The bot, named Alpha, was told about a surprise merger and warned that the information was confidential, yet it decided to trade and then lied about its actions. Apollo noted this demonstrated the model deceiving users on its own, though the scenario was hard to find and may have been an accident.

DWP algorithm approved Kickstart gateways with no trading history or based abroad

An FE Week investigation found that the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) approved dozens of companies as Kickstart gateways through automated due diligence checks using the Cabinet Office Spotlight Tool, although some had little or no trading history or were based abroad. The DWP said gateways were subject to stringent checks and later said human checks were also used. After the findings were shared with the Treasury and the DWP, the department stopped taking gateway applications and scrapped the requirement for small employers to use gateways from 3 February.

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Field Service AI singles out workers in performance predictions

A report by Cracked Labs found that Microsoft's Dynamics 365 Field Service software uses AI to generate performance metrics and predict task durations, singling out individual workers. The AI predictions can be influenced by the worker's identity, such as increasing or decreasing estimated duration. Microsoft stated the system is not intended for employment decisions and is not a surveillance tool, but the report raises concerns about potential misuse for worker monitoring.

Deloitte software glitches wrongly remove Texans from Medicaid

Advocacy groups filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission alleging that Deloitte's eligibility software, TIERS, used by Texas Medicaid, wrongly disenrolled qualified recipients due to glitches. Nearly 1.8 million Texans lost coverage after the pandemic pause ended, with many errors attributed to procedural issues but some linked to system malfunctions. Deloitte denies the claims, while the state says it restored care for at least 90,000 people. The FTC has not yet responded to the complaint.

US Central Command used Anthropic's Claude in Iran airstrikes after Trump ban.

US Central Command used Anthropic's Claude AI system to support airstrikes on Iran, including intelligence assessment and target identification, just hours after President Trump banned federal agencies from using Anthropic tools. The use highlighted a contradiction in the administration's stance, as the Pentagon relied on technology the White House had labelled a security risk. Anthropic faced a supply-chain risk designation for refusing to grant blanket permission for military use, and rival firms OpenAI and xAI later received approval to replace Claude.

Buenos Aires city government uses live facial recognition to track minors in criminal database

The Buenos Aires city government deployed a live facial recognition system in April 2019 that scans subway passengers and matches them against CONARC, a national database of alleged offenders. Human Rights Watch found that the database includes at least 166 children, some as young as one to three years old, and that the system has led to numerous false arrests. The system was implemented without public consultation, and there is no mechanism to correct mistakes. A civil rights organization filed a lawsuit, and the government is pushing a bill to legalize the technology.

Philip Morris accused of using AI to rig EU tobacco consultation responses

Dutch broadcasters Pointer and NOS allege that Philip Morris International used an AI-powered platform, 'Your Voice, Your Choice', to generate responses to the European Commission's public consultation on tobacco legislation. The platform offered pre-defined responses and AI assistance, leading to an estimated 30 per cent of all responses being AI-generated. Philip Morris denies wrongdoing, stating that users retained full control and that anti-tobacco lobbyists are attempting to discredit legitimate participation. The incident raises concerns about the integrity of EU democratic processes.

West Midlands Police test NDAS system to assess crime risk

West Midlands Police are testing a system called the National Data Analytics Solution (NDAS) that analyses police data to assess the risk of individuals committing a crime or becoming a victim. The Home Office has funded the project with millions of pounds, intending to roll it out across England and Wales. Critics warn that the system could reinforce bias against minorities and undermine the presumption of innocence. The police say the technology is designed to support, not replace, officer decision-making and that it is still in early testing.
