Lawyers from Ellis George and K&L Gates Sanctioned for AI-Generated Fake Citations
Attorneys from Ellis George LLP and K&L Gates LLP submitted a brief to a special master in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California containing numerous hallucinated legal citations generated by AI tools including CoCounsel, Westlaw Precision, and Google Gemini. The lawyers failed to verify the citations, and even after being alerted to errors, filed a corrected brief that still contained fake authorities. Special Master Michael Wilner found the conduct tantamount to bad faith, struck the brief, denied discovery relief, and ordered the firms to jointly pay $31,100 in the defendant's legal fees.

Google Translate erases female historians and male nurses due to gender bias
An experiment by AlgorithmWatch found that Google Translate systematically changes the gender of occupation words when translating between gender-inflected languages, using English as a bridge. Female historians were rendered as male, and male nurses as female, reinforcing stereotypes. Google acknowledged the issue, explaining that gender is lost when translating to English, the bridging language. The feature affects hundreds of millions of European users who cannot easily avoid Google Translate on Android and Chrome.

Google ordered to change autocomplete in Japan after privacy complaint
An unidentified man in Japan took Google to court after its autocomplete function linked his name to crimes he did not commit. The algorithmically generated suggestions caused reputational harm, making it difficult for him to find work. A Japanese court issued a provisional order for Google to delete the specific terms, but the company has not yet complied, stating it is reviewing the order. Google defended the feature, arguing that the suggestions are generated mechanically based on user search popularity.

Google's Ad System Shows Gender Bias in Job Ads, Study Finds
Researchers from Carnegie Mellon University and the International Computer Science Institute used a tool called AdFisher to probe Google's ad-targeting system. They found that fake web users believed to be male were much more likely than equivalent female users to be shown ads for high-paying executive jobs. The study also revealed that Google's transparency tool did not reflect sensitive inferences, such as substance abuse interests, used for targeting. Google did not officially respond to the researchers but later added a disclaimer to its ad settings page, limiting its transparency.
