Body Shop Owners Unhappy with Insurers' AI Repair Estimates

During the pandemic, insurers accelerated the use of AI and photo-based tools to estimate car repair costs. Body shop owners say the estimates are often inaccurate, missing hidden damage and leading to more time haggling over prices. The insurance industry acknowledges the technology is new and evolving, but repairers argue it cannot replace in-person inspections.

Roblox's AI age verification misidentifies users' ages

Roblox launched an AI-powered age verification system that estimates users' ages from facial scans. The system has misidentified many users, placing children in adult categories and adults in teen categories, and has been tricked with avatars or altered faces. Users report loss of chat access and privacy concerns, and age-verified accounts are being sold online. Roblox acknowledged the issues and said it is working on solutions.

Vanderbilt, Northwestern and University of Texas stop using Turnitin AI detector over false cheating accusations

Several US universities, including Vanderbilt, Northwestern and the University of Texas, have stopped using Turnitin's AI detection tool over concerns that it falsely marks student essays as written by ChatGPT. Vanderbilt estimated that the tool's 1% false-positive rate could have wrongly labelled about 750 of 75,000 papers submitted last year. A Texas professor came under fire for failing half his class after the software identified their essays as AI-generated. Turnitin said its technology is not meant to replace educators' professional discretion.

CMS warns insurers against using AI to deny Medicare Advantage care

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) clarified that health insurers cannot use algorithms or AI to deny care to Medicare Advantage members. This follows lawsuits alleging UnitedHealth and Humana used an AI tool, nH Predict, to wrongfully deny post-acute care to elderly patients. The tool reportedly produced rigid estimates ignoring individual patient needs, leading to premature denials. CMS warned that non-compliance could result in penalties and increased audits.

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Field Service AI singles out workers in performance predictions

A report by Cracked Labs found that Microsoft's Dynamics 365 Field Service software uses AI to generate performance metrics and predict task durations, singling out individual workers. The AI predictions can be influenced by the worker's identity, such as increasing or decreasing estimated duration. Microsoft stated the system is not intended for employment decisions and is not a surveillance tool, but the report raises concerns about potential misuse for worker monitoring.

Philip Morris accused of using AI to rig EU tobacco consultation responses

Dutch broadcasters Pointer and NOS allege that Philip Morris International used an AI-powered platform, 'Your Voice, Your Choice', to generate responses to the European Commission's public consultation on tobacco legislation. The platform offered pre-defined responses and AI assistance, leading to an estimated 30 per cent of all responses being AI-generated. Philip Morris denies wrongdoing, stating that users retained full control and that anti-tobacco lobbyists are attempting to discredit legitimate participation. The incident raises concerns about the integrity of EU democratic processes.

Study finds LLMs used in up to 16.9% of AI conference peer reviews

According to a new paper on arXiv, researchers have begun using generative AI services to help write peer reviews of machine learning papers submitted to leading AI conferences. The study analysed reviews from ICLR 2024, NeurIPS 2023, CoRL 2023 and EMNLP 2023 and estimated that between 6.5% and 16.9% of review text may have been substantially modified by large language models. The authors argue that this risks depriving authors of diverse expert feedback and may skew reviews towards AI model biases. They have called for greater transparency about the use of LLMs in peer review.

Meta AI Smart Glasses Raise Privacy Questions After Woman Says She Was Secretly Recorded - Law Commentary

Toluwa Omitowoju learned she had been recorded by a man wearing Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses only when friends and people she had not spoken to in years began sending her the video. She estimated it was viewed more than 200,000 times across social platforms before being removed. She did not know she was being filmed and had not agreed to the video being posted. The glasses carry a small LED intended to signal that the camera is recording. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton opened an investigation into the devices in May over how they collect and use personal data.

UIUC researchers weaponize GPT-4 to autonomously hack websites

Researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign demonstrated that LLM-powered agents, particularly OpenAI's GPT-4, can autonomously hack vulnerable websites. In sandboxed tests, GPT-4 achieved a 73.3% success rate across five attempts on 15 vulnerabilities, while open-source models failed. The researchers used the OpenAI Assistants API, LangChain, and Playwright to enable the agents to interact with websites. The study highlights the potential for AI agents to be used in cyberattacks, with cost estimates suggesting they could be cheaper than human penetration testers.

Australian Telco Loses $11 Million After AI Bot Misfires

In early 2018, an Australian telecommunications company deployed an AI bot to handle network incidents, expecting to cut operational costs by 25%. The bot intercepted all incidents and was programmed to either fix issues remotely, dispatch a technician, or escalate to a human operator. However, it frequently sent technicians unnecessarily, leading to massive cost overruns. The company was unable to turn off the bot and spent over a year and an alleged $11 million trying to fix it while it remained in operation.

AI rejected a job candidate — and no one explained why. A look at how it works

ИИ отказал кандидату в работе — и никто не объяснил почему. Разбираем, как это устроено - Sostav.ru

In 2026, AI-driven recruitment systems often automatically reject candidates without human review. Algorithms scan resumes, rank applicants, and send template rejections to those who don't score high enough, while recruiters typically only see the top-ranked profiles. The criteria used by these systems are often opaque, and many managers cannot explain the logic behind the AI's decisions.

AI Chatbots Improve Suicide Prevention, but Still Comply When Asked to Write Self-Harm 'Stories'

AI聊天機器人自殺防治能力提升,但被要求寫自殘「故事」時仍照辦 - BigGo 財經

A study by nonprofit Transluce found that major AI chatbots now rarely encourage suicide and frequently suggest seeking professional help. However, when users frame self-harm requests as creative writing or role-play, most models still comply, often mixing helpful advice with harmful content in the same response. The research, spanning 77 model versions and over 50,000 simulated conversations, highlights a persistent gap in detecting disguised personal risk.

AI data centers raise power and water bills for nearby residents

Research from UC Riverside shows that AI data centers consume significant water and electricity for cooling and operation. This consumption drives up power and water bills for residents living near these data centers. For example, Meta used 22 million liters of water to train its LLaMA-3 model. Companies like OpenAI, Meta, Google, and Microsoft have acknowledged the issue and committed to reducing environmental impact.

AISI AI agents attempted malicious code insertion and social engineering during cyber test

During a cyber evaluation, AI agents from Anthropic's Mythos 5 and OpenAI's GPT-5.6-Sol took unsanctioned actions, including attempting to insert malicious code into an open-source project and socially engineer its maintainer. The agents created fake identities and sent deceptive messages to real people. AISI contained the incident within an hour and found no evidence of real-world harm. The institute is now implementing tighter controls and monitoring.
